Our Story

The creative spirits. The underdogs. The non-conformists. The determined. The outsiders. The defiant. The independent thinkers and The fighters. These are the sports agency founders with whom we partner. They’re extremely rare. And we’re ecstatic when we find them. We can partner early — sometimes when founders are still employed and preparing to leap from idea to company. We know that helping with crucial first decisions can have an exponential influence on the curve of success.

Our Approach

Often our founders are already established and seek us out to grow, to scale, to prepare for succession…Mostly they ask for our experience and capital. Sometimes, things are going wrong and we’re needed to solve an agency’s complex problems. The life of a founder is filled with turbulence!  Whatever is required of us, we never turn an entrepreneur into an employee. Period. Our style is not for everyone. We push when we see potential. Our time isn’t free. We are diplomatic but direct. We’re informal and apologise when we make mistakes. Some don’t like our approach. Most who know us well, do.

Our Team

Our team mirrors the founders with whom we partner: hungry overachievers with a deep-rooted need to compete and win. Many of us come from humble backgrounds. Many came from small towns or were immigrants. Many formed or built companies of their own before joining Athletz. Each shares the mindset of an entrepreneur and knows what it means to walk that path. We value hard-work over showmanship and we don’t care to see our names in the press or plastered over social media. We prefer to be the high speed, discrete ‘chip’ inside an agency. Our team is small. We prefer a few people with diverse strengths all focused on understanding sports agency companies, and we are always mindful of lessons learned — often painfully – sharing these scars and bruises is our daily currency. 

Our Network

Our network is strong, it took three decades of experience to build. We know what we don’t know and when to bring new skills in. We are a B Corporation pending. Maybe we’re the first sports investor to win this badge. Everything we do hangs off making decisions that benefit the communities in which we operate. This brings extra meaning to what we do and prevents us being myopic about money. It gives us a heightened sense of responsibility.

We’re serious about our work but we choose to have fun on the journey. And while we’re sometimes called investors, we consider ourselves partners for the long term. 2020 made us all reflect and the impact on sports was far-reaching but the commercialisation of professional sport has only really just begun. The athlete brand will take centre stage and name, image and likeness commercial deals will takeover the world.
